What is a period?
Each month, the uterus builds a lining. If there is no pregnancy, some of that lining leaves the body through the vagina as blood. That is a period. It is a normal body process, although seeing blood in your underwear for the first time can still be a surprise.
Your first period might be light, and the blood may look red or brown. It may take time for your periods to settle into a pattern. It helps to make a note of when one starts, but you don’t need to predict the next one perfectly just yet.
What do I need?
Sanitary towels or pads, and period pants, are often simple options to start with. Sanitary towels or pads stick inside your underwear and absorb the blood. Period pants are another option. You can try different products over time and find what feels comfortable for you.
For school, a small bag or period pack with a couple of pads, spare underwear, hygiene wipes, a bag for anything soiled, and a note for your teacher can help you feel prepared. If your period starts and you don’t have any supplies, ask a teacher or another adult you trust. Remember, you won’t be the first person this has happened to.
What if I have questions?
Go ahead and ask them. You might want to know how to use a pad, what to do at school, or why your tummy feels uncomfortable. You also deserve to speak up if pain or bleeding is making it hard to get on with your day. Having a period doesn’t mean you have to put up with feeling awful.
Understanding what is happening can make the whole thing feel less scary. You can learn at your own pace, and you certainly don’t have to figure it out alone.
