Is it just me, or is everything changing?

A real-life guide to puberty and your first period.

Your body is changing, and sometimes it feels as though everyone else got the instructions except you. Some friends have grown, some have boobs, others are already saying they’ve had their first period. You might be wondering when your body will change or when your first period will come, or hoping it won’t happen in the middle of school or when out of the house.

Puberty doesn’t have one timetable for every girl. You may notice your breasts beginning to grow, more body hair, changes in your skin or a different body odour. You might feel excited about some changes and fed up with others. Both feelings are allowed. Just remember you’re not alone!

Your first period is one of the changes that may come much later. You don’t have to guess exactly when it will happen. You can learn what a period is, try out a pad at home if you want to, and keep a small period pack in your schoolbag. Knowing what you can do to prepare can take a lot of the worry out of it.

Food, rest and time to move in ways you enjoy all matter while you’re growing. So does having someone who listens when you have a question, even if it feels awkward to say out loud. You can ask your mum or another person you trust. There are no silly questions about your body.
